Daniel Lewis 80th Birthday Celebration Performance and Reception Sunday, October 6, 2024 New World School of the Arts Dance Theater and Art Gallery Performance begins at 3 pm, Reception at 4 pm Performances by Dance NOW! Miami, Masha Maddux and New World School of the Arts, Tributes and catered reception with champagne and wine to follow.
Join Dance NOW! Miami and New World School of the Arts to celebrate the 80th birthday of founding Dean of Dance, advisor, mentor and friend, international dance luminary, Dr. Daniel Lewis with a performance and tributes.
Dance NOW! will perform “Open Book” one of Lewis’ Seminal works from 1981 as well as work from their repertoire. Also on the bill, students from the New World School of the Arts Dance Division, performing a work by Martha Graham, and a special performance by Masha Dashinka Maddux, former principal dancer of the Martha Graham Company and a graduate of NWSA high school and college programs. Maddux will perform a solo choreographed by Gerri Houlihan.
Tributes will be made by Donna Krasnow, co-author of Lewis’ biography, longtime friend and colleague Michael Uthoff, Artistic Director of Dance St. Louis who shared time with Lewis at Juilliard, in the José Limón Dance Company and as Guest choreographer at New World, Dante Puleio, Artistic Director of Limón Dance Company and Robert Battle, former Artistic Director, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
Proceeds from the celebration will go to support Miami Dance Futures, Lewis’ non-profit dedicated to the support and growth of dance in Florida and New York. MDF encourages, promotes, and assists emerging and established artists by providing administrative, financial, and technical support; commissions new cross-cultural artistic works; advocates and sponsors educational conferences; and develops new projects through cooperative ventures and innovative management. MDF provides opportunities for outstanding artists in the Florida and New York to continue making contributions to their communities, even during these challenging times of living through a pandemic.
