Dance NOW! Miami Program II featuring Blue Pencil

DNM presents the world premiere of “Blue Pencil.” Co-Artistic Directors Diego Salterini and Hannah Baumgarten join forces with Portuguese-based Dance em Diálogos Artistic Director Solange Melo to create this politically charged ballet based on the Blue Pencil Censorship in Portugal, implemented by the Salazar government during the Estado Novo regime from 1933 to 1974; this censorship act that dominated all branches of Portuguese culture: nothing escaped the "blue pencil of silence. The original choreographic work will transform the stories of this time into dance, highlighting the power of the arts to resist cultural repression.

Baumgarten, Salterini and Melo will approach the subject matter as a cautionary tale about government driven censorship in the United States and specifically in the State of Florida, made even more poignant after the radical cuts to the arts this year.

This performance will feature DNM portion of the ballet and will travel to Portugal to perform the complete work with sections by both companies in March.

The evening of dance will also include audience favorites Court Dance, Baumgarten’s Machiavellian Political Tribal Dance and Salterini’s Drawing Circles, a tribute to MIMO architecture, as part of the ongoing 25th anniversary celebration.
